3 Tips To Help You Personalize Your Drapes

by Aapo Ahola

When it comes to creating a cohesive feeling in the rooms of your home, having the perfect drapes can be beneficial. If you are looking to design your home on a budget, investing in expensive drapery might be out of the question. Here are three things you can do to personalize your drapes and give them a more high-end feel, all without breaking the bank.

1. Transform plain white panels into stylish ombre drapes.

Ombre (which is a gradual shading method) is a color trend that has become popular in interior design. If you have plain white drapes hanging in your home, you already have the perfect canvas to create your own personalized ombre window treatments.

Completing this project is simple; you will need a bucket, your drapery panels, and some fabric dye. Mix the dye according to the manufacturer's directions in a bucket, then place the bottom section of your curtain panel into the bucket. Let the dye process, but make sure that you move the fabric up and out of the dye at regular intervals to get the gradual shading you desire. Ombre drapes can add elegance and interest to any room.

2. Stencil intricate designs onto plain drapery panels.

Fabric featuring intricate designs can be costly, but you can recreate the look for a fraction of the cost by choosing to stencil a plain drapery panel instead of investing in high-end patterned drapes.

Begin by selecting a stencil that matches your home's decor from a craft or hardware store. Purchase some paint, and measure where you want your stencils to appear on the drapery panels. Secure the stencil in place using painter's tape, and use a foam paint roller to apply the paint. Lay the panel out flat to dry, and enjoy your personalized drapes.

3. Add an elegant trim to your existing drapery panels.

Something as simple as adding an elegant trim to your existing drapery panels can breathe new life into any room in your home. This project requires only basic sewing skills and can be completed in a short amount of time.

Measure the perimeter of your curtain panels and purchase a trim that matches your home's decor from your local craft or fabric store (lace is always a great option) in a coordinating length. Pin the trim to the interior edge of your drapery panels to secure it in place, and use a straight stitch on your sewing machine to permanently attach the trim. If you don't have a sewing machine, you can hand-sew the trim in place.

Creating personalized drapery panels doesn't have to be difficult. Take advantage of the stylish atmosphere high-end drapes can create by crafting your own personalized panels in the future.
